something that's been on my mind lately is guitar.
most places i go people tell me that they really enjoyed my playing, one guy i recall very recently said to me "you really look like you love playing guitar." and it's true- it's one of my very favorite things to do.
but i've always felt like i'm only mediocre at guitar. maybe that's because some of my closest friends are friggin prodigies... and can shred like nobody's business. but my ability to only play chords has been glaring at me lately. so i began to try out some scales. learning scales reminded me of the early days of learning guitar... the frustration... the aching hands... and the one of twenty tries when it would work, the glorious satisfaction of it all.
my dream with guitar is to be able to jam. i don't think i dream of playing electric... i can appreciate the style of music electric guitar plays, but i have a serious love for acoustic stuff. but if i could walk up to another person with an acoustic guitar and confidently say "hey, wanna jam?" ... wow. that would be so awesome.
my plans for next year involve a minor in musical study. i have heard that the school i'm going to offers a course in guitar... and i think i'm going to take it.
there's something strange about guitar. i always thought my biggest passion was voice... but i'm not entirely sure anymore... i actually want to practice guitar... quite often. and i take every possible opportunity that crosses my path to learn, sometimes even going out of my way to find out something new about it.
plus, knowing guitar opens up a lot of composition opportunities. i can write entire songs by myself. that being said though, this year has definitely taught me the value of others in song-writing. others often add a new dimension to a song that i never would have thought of. it's cool.
in short, i never thought, as a musician, i could actually want to practice an instrument- especially technique.
who knew? it's cool to prove yourself wrong.
guess i won't be giving up on guitar anytime soon.
